HUGE thanks are in order to the City of San Leandro! As you recall, the Eastern side of our SP Depot was damaged on December 30th, 2014 in the big wind storm here in San Leandro. A large Eucalyptus tree on the Thrasher Park property uprooted and fell into our building, damaging the eves, a window, and some of the Norris Falls area of the G&O Garden Railway.
We cleaned up the railway, boarded up the one broken window pane, and awaited the city\’s contractors to begin the repairs.
Construction work began on our 117-year-old Southern Pacific Depot at the beginning of June. You may have seen the scaffolding that was erected when coming to the Depot, or may have even seen workers there repairing the eves. We\’re very happy to report that the construction was swift and completed during the last week of June.
As you can see here, the new area stands out significantly from the old area. That just goes to show you how important it is for us to raise the required funds to get our Depot painted! Please feel free to help us out by making a donation! You can contribute to our GoFundMe campaign to help us pay for the lead abatement treatment and repainting that this old girl needs so badly!
So once again, big thanks to the City of San Leandro for repairing our Depot! Thanks are also in order to Society member Jacques Verdier for donating his time to be on site during some of the construction, as well as to former Society Historian Joe Winkel and Society President Mark Johnson for coordinating efforts with the City to get the work done!
Check out our gallery below for photos of the scaffolding in place and the work after it\’s done!
