June 2008The San Leandro Historical Railway Society (SLHRS) began construction on the G&O Outdoor Model Railroad in early 2008 behind the Depot. The first step was to install the construction shed as shown in the photos. The G&O held its first public operating display during the SLHRS Summer Open House on June 14-15, 2008. Two O gauge (3-rail) and one G gauge display were operated. We want to thank Bill Alexander, Kit Baxter, Gene Cabral, Jim Stephens, Joe, Mark and Kyle Warzecha, and Joe Winkel for their help in setting-up and operating the G&O displays. Please see the display photos taken by Kit Baxter. "Big Dig 1" was held Saturday, June 21, 2008. This step involved digging the base for the pavers, piling up dirt for the display, and working on the water and irrigation systems. The people participating in "Big Dig 1" were: Kit Baxter, J. J. Carbino, Ed Lee, Glenn McGhee, Nancy Norris, and her friend Ron, Craig Walker, Joe Winkel and Joe Barker. Please see the "Big Dig" photos taken by Nancy Norris. The G&O will be a unique outdoor model railroad because it is being built as a public display. It will feature two gauges of trains G. gauge and O gauge 3-rail. G gauge is the most popular gauge for outdoor trains. Lionel and other companies popularized O gauge 3-rail early in the last century. The outdoor layout will include waterfalls, beautiful natural scenery, soaring bridges, and an activity area where children can run trains.Once built, the public will be able to enjoy watching and operating outdoor trains whenever the SLHRS Depot is open. Please see Open To The Public section for the operation hours. We are looking for people to help build and operate the G&O including people who are primarily interested in the garden aspect of outdoor model railroading. Please contact Joe Barker if you are interested in participating in this exciting project.
